Start with the finished piece

Write both nominal slab thickness and required finished thickness, including tolerances for review. Check the actual lot before treating a catalogue description as a measurement. A mitred apron may create a deep edge appearance without a solid slab of that full depth. Show the construction in section.

Understand the weight comparison

Volume equals area multiplied by thickness. For one square metre, 0.03 ÷ 0.02 = 1.5. This is a geometric comparison, not a measured shipping weight. Absolute mass requires the actual stone density and dimensions. Crates, packing and other components add weight.

Ask the supplier for net and gross weights and check unloading access with the receiving team. Do not infer lifting capacity from this comparison.

Review supports before releasing the drawings

Thickness alone cannot establish safe spans, overhangs or fixing. The selected marble, natural features, cutouts, support arrangement and loads matter. Have the responsible fabricator, installer or engineer review the piece and supporting structure.

Match the discussion to the application

For a vanity, coordinate basin and tap cutouts, cabinet support and the visible edge. For a wall panel, coordinate panel size, fixing design and handling. For a furniture top, resolve the base, connection points and edge appearance.

On a hotel package, record thickness by piece type and room zone. Do not change all pieces from 20 mm to 30 mm without reviewing interfaces, weights and installation.

Compare two quotations fairly

Ask for the same material selection, finished dimensions, quantity, surface finish, profiles, inspection and packing in each alternative. Require both offers to identify changes to support or fabrication scope.
